With the growing number of street taco locations popping up in Utah county, it’s easy to overlook many of them, but Taqueria el gallo oro de Jalisco is definitely worth going to. El gallo oro de Jalisco is a small restaurant in a small shopping center off Freedom boulevard in Provo near the Provo Rec Center, with a big red “Taqueria” sign making it easy to spot from the road. The restaurant is small, with few employees, creating a family-owned, authentic atmosphere. When we went on a Saturday evening, the restaurant wasn’t very crowded, with only one other couple dining at the same time, but even with a larger crowd there seemed to be plenty of seating, all geared towards larger groups dining together.

At the center of each table there’s a bowl of salsa with a pepper in it, which looks hot enough to make

anybody sweat. All of that plus a menu all in Spanish and a tv playing Spanish novelas, you can almost feel like you’ve left Provo entered a restaurant in the middle of Mexico.

The main food served at el gallo oro de Jalisco is, as I’m sure you’ve already guessed, authentic Mexican street tacos. There are, however, several other food options besides tacos available, including tortas, quesadillas, burritos, and even menudo. The really impressive part of the menu is the variety of meat choices available for your tacos, which are al pastor (marinated pork), pollo (chicken), chorizo (sausage), carnitas (pork), asada (beef), vuche/buche (pig stomach), cabeza (head), tripa (intestine), and lengua (tongue). For people new to tacos, the al pastor and pollo are great options, but it also caters to those with more exotic tastes or anybody who’s just feeling adventurous.

In addition to the many meat

options you can order for your tacos, there’s also a bar for toppings, including peppers, multiple types of salsa, onions, radishes, cilantro, and other things you would typically find at a taco bar.

While we were satisfied with the taste and quality of the tacos we had at el gallo oro de Jalisco, I don’t think they were anything you couldn’t find at any of the other many street taco restaurants located in Provo.

The one thing, however, that sets this place apart is the price. On normal days, the tacos are only $1.25 each, which I think is a great deal. In addition to the normal prices, they have Taco Tuesday, when tacos are only ninety-nine cents each, which is a price that’s hard to come by, even at cheap restaurants or taco stands.
