Every year the City of South Jordan celebrates Light the Night! This event is completely free to the public! Get there early though, twenty minutes in, and parking is scarce. Light the Night starts at 6:30 and ends at 8. There are several events and activities to see. This event is family friendly and almost entirely outdoors.
Light the Night takes place in the South Jordan plaza. There are lots of shops surrounding the plaza and all are open during Light the Night. To start, all of the trees at this event are brightly decorated. There is a huge Christmas tree at the end of the plaza which is perfect for Christmas portraits. The tree lighting starts at 6:30.

Santa sits in a Santa workshop near the Town Center building. Lots of little lamp posts decorate his toy shop and a small fire stands right behind him to warm up all of the little kids who wait to sit on his lap. While the kids wait to meet with Santa, there is a huge projector outside displaying “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindoor.” This helps entertain children and families while they wait in line for Santa. After meeting Santa, on the left there is a giant stage where several performing groups take their turns on the stage. At 6:35, the Bingham High School Drumline performs. Then there is a vocal quartet from Elk Ridge Middle School followed by Sam Levitre and Brianna Wyss. Following them is the Herriman Harmonix. At 7:25, two vocal soloists from Elk Ridge Middle School perform and then lastly, the Children’s Choir from Jordan Ridge Elementary School perform. These performing groups are truly amazing, and most dress up in costumes.

After the performances, head into the Town Center building where you will be greeted by a giant gingerbread man completely made out of candies. He stands by a table with a gingerbread house inside a snow globe, also completely made out of candies. There are two tables that line the center along the sides which are filled with gingerbread houses. Earlier in the week, anyone could submit a gingerbread house for the contest. There were several really impressive ginger bread houses including a star wars themed one, a dragon, barbie dream house, a small replica of the Town Center, and an actual giant house. At the opposite end, there is a giant Santa completely made of candy as well.

Mrs. Claus sits in the middle of Town Center. She sits in the reading room the entire evening reading Christmas stories to children. There is also a craft room available for children to color, paint, and create Christmas themed crafts to take home.
Towards the end of the night, hay rides start and go all around the shopping plaza. Once the ride is over, there is a line for free hot chocolate and free cookies. Hurry in and come enjoy the free hot chocolate, cookies, entertainment, and competitions.
